palm oil

Recently I was made aware of the palm oil issue. Yes ok, I’m slow.

The issue is that it is produced using non sustainable methods and causes the destruction of rain forest which in turn causes the destruction of animals: mostly the orangutan.

So today when I visited the doctor to get stitches removed (yay) I also visited the local chemist to replace some cosmetics. Face cleanser, actually. I duly read the labels on an Australian-based possibly natural product and feeling a little unsure but hmmm maybe ok I bought it. The other option was a local brand at twice the price

Alas when I read the names that palm oil can be labelled I find that my newly purchased product has PEG-100 stearate in it. So I’m assuming that’s palm oil or a relation thereof. I can’t easily find the source of this stearate but I did find this:

“PEG-100 stearate, have been found to contain potentially harmful impurities including heavy metals, ethylene oxide and dioxanes.” (Skinfopedia).

And this website is really useful: Say No To Palm Oil. It does indicate that stearates could be derived from other plants apart from palms.

Still, pays to check eh?

PS: Here’s the answer on the FAQ page:

Q: Do Natio’s products contain palm oil?

A: A few of our products do contain derivatives of Palm Oil. Issues related to deforestation have encouraged us to source Palm Oil derivatives from a certified sustainable supplier.
