There’s nothing like a Wellington literary event for focusing the mind.
And a chat with a writer about the 1980s to make one go searching TeAra.
The term for the government sponsored communes in the 1970s was ohu. (see previous post). They were an idea of Matiu Rata’s and supported by the Kirk Government. Eight were established but after Kirk died the idea fell away. The idea had its roots in communities like Parihaka but was spurred on by the hippie movement in the 1970s and famous communes like Beeville in the Coromandel.
There ya go. Read the rest on Te Ara.
